Sponsored jointly by CGS and ProQuest Dissertations Publishing, a Division of ProQuest Information and Learning, and first presented in 1981, the Distinguished Dissertation Award is made annually to individuals who, in the opinion of the award committee, have completed dissertations representing original work that makes an unusually significant contribution to the discipline.
Each year, the Western Association of Graduate Schools (WAGS) partners with ProQuest to solicit nominees in four award categories. This prestigious regional competition is an important opportunity for your institution to showcase innovation and creativity by your graduate students.
The nominee must have completed the dissertation and have been awarded, or will be awarded, the doctoral degree between the defined 2-year period July 1 to June 30, inclusive (see instructions below for key dates and application deadlines).

Each year the Graduate School recognizes outstanding doctoral dissertations in four broad fields: Life Sciences (1 award) Biostatistics, biological and life sciences, biomedical sciences, chemistry, epidemiology, physics-biophysics, psychobiology, pharmaceutical sciences, allied health professions, and nursing.
The purpose of this study was to identify and compare common criteria and characteristics for award-winning dissertations utilized by prominent national educational organizations. Formal and informal criteria for award-winning dissertations were examined and compared to distinguish commonalities in the dissertations and award processes.
